The city of Ur was located in the Mesopotamia and was south of all of the other cities. Ur was a port city on the Arabian Gulf, making it a popular place for trading goods. Ur had a prime position on the Euphrates river and acted as transportation hub for travelers and shipping. Southern Mesopotamia was fertile and was host to industry and farming. To the east of lower Mesopotamia is the Elam mountains and the southern areas were known as the sea-marshes.
